At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, dwelt a shepherd boy. His being was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his charges imbued in him here a feeling of tranquil contentment.
But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. However, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
